About this model
The BMW M2 is a high-performance version of the BMW 2 Series automobile developed by BMW's motorsport division, BMW M GmbH. As the 2 Series replaced the 1 Series coupé and convertible models, the first-generation M2 was marketed as the most basic M model in the range.

What fails its inspection
Great Britain's MOT record for the 2018 3.0 petrol. 134 of 1,527 tests failed, 9%.
Better than 68% of 2018 cars. The typical one fails 10%, across 966 models with enough tests behind them to say.
| Where | Share of failures | Failed tests |
|---|---|---|
| Tyres and wheels | 39% | 52 |
| Suspension | 38% | 51 |
| Lights and electrics | 10% | 13 |
| Exhaust and emissions | 9% | 12 |
| Plates and identity | 9% | 12 |
| Brakes | 7% | 10 |
The defects inspectors cite
- A spring or spring component fractured or seriously weakened
- A tyre cords visible or damaged
- A tyre seriously damaged
- A suspension pin, bush or joint excessively worn
- Number plate does not conform to the specified requirements
- Tyre tread depth not in accordance with the requirements
Where it stands out against its peers
- Suspension: failed more often than 93% of 2018 cars — 38% of its 134 failed tests, where an ordinary 2018 car has 12%.
- Plates and identity: failed more often than 94% of 2018 cars — 9% of its 134 failed tests, where an ordinary 2018 car has 2%.
Same model year only, at least 30 peer cars, zeros included. Every car has a worst part; this shows which, and how far from ordinary it is. A high share means more to check, not a verdict.
NHTSA's investigations are American; no European regulator publishes an equivalent record, so this section has nothing to draw on for a European car. There is no European equivalent of the service-bulletin register either.

When it starts failing
At 60–80k miles this one fails 20% of its inspections, against the 14% an ordinary car of the same age fails.
| Odometer | Failure rate | Rate | Its age | Tests |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 0–20k miles | 5% | 6% | 246 | |
| 20–40k miles | 9% | 9% | 851 | |
| 40–60k miles | 8% | 12% | 379 | |
| 60–80k miles | 20% | 14% | 46 |
1,522 British inspections, grouped by the odometer reading recorded at the test.
Half of these have more than 20k miles on them. That is how far people drive this car, not how long it lasts.

A manufacturing defect in the passenger airbag can cause pressure loss when it's activated. This can lead to improper deployment, thereby impairing the airbag's restraining effect. This increases the risk of injuries in the event of an accident. The product does not comply with the Regulation on the approval and market surveillance of motor vehicles and their trailers, and of systems, components and separate technical units intended for such vehicles.
