About this model
The Chevrolet Aveo is a five-seat, front-wheel drive subcompact car (B-segment) marketed by General Motors (GM) since 2002 over two generations. Originally developed by South Korean manufacturer Daewoo Motors and marketed as the Daewoo Kalos, the takeover of Daewoo by GM to form GM Daewoo Auto & Technology (GMDAT) resulted in the car's marketing in 120 countries under seven brands — prominently as the Chevrolet Aveo.

The manufacturer has told owners of one of these to stop driving until the repair is done.
- The propellant in the driver airbag may deteriorate over time. If the airbags deploy, it can result in fragments from the inflator injuring the vehicle's occupants. The product does not comply with the Regulation on the approval and market surveillance of motor vehicles and their trailers, and of systems, components and separate technical units intended for such vehicles.
What fails its inspection
Great Britain's MOT record for the 2009 1.2 petrol. 1,090 of 3,328 tests failed, 33%.
Better than 4% of 2009 cars. The typical one fails 25%, across 961 models with enough tests behind them to say.
| Where | Share of failures | Failed tests |
|---|---|---|
| Suspension | 53% | 577 |
| Brakes | 44% | 485 |
| Lights and electrics | 41% | 448 |
| Steering | 25% | 272 |
| Body and structure | 22% | 235 |
| Visibility | 21% | 230 |
The defects inspectors cite
- A suspension pin, bush or joint excessively worn
- A lamp missing, inoperative or in the case of a multiple light source more than 1/2 not functioning
- A steering ball joint with excessive wear or free play
- Significant brake effort recorded with no brake applied indicating a binding brake
- Stop lamp missing, inoperative or in the case of a multiple light source more than 1/2 not functioning
- Windscreen washers not working or not providing sufficient fluid to clear the windscreen
Where it stands out against its peers
- Steering: failed more often than 94% of 2009 cars — 25% of its 1,090 failed tests, where an ordinary 2009 car has 5%.
Same model year only, at least 30 peer cars, zeros included. Every car has a worst part; this shows which, and how far from ordinary it is. A high share means more to check, not a verdict.
NHTSA's investigations are American; no European regulator publishes an equivalent record, so this section has nothing to draw on for a European car. There is no European equivalent of the service-bulletin register either.

When it starts failing
At 140–160k miles this one fails 32% of its inspections, against the 29% an ordinary car of the same age fails.
| Odometer | Failure rate | Rate | Its age | Tests |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 0–20k miles | 19% | 11% | 42 | |
| 20–40k miles | 24% | 15% | 293 | |

| 140–160k miles | 32% | 29% | 31 |
3,316 British inspections, grouped by the odometer reading recorded at the test.
Half of these have more than 60k miles on them. That is how far people drive this car, not how long it lasts.
