What fails its inspection
Great Britain's MOT record for the 2009 2.0 diesel. 20 of 70 tests failed, 29%.
Better than 24% of 2009 cars. The typical one fails 25%, across 961 models with enough tests behind them to say.
| Where | Share of failures | Failed tests |
|---|---|---|
| Brakes | 70% | 14 |
| Lights and electrics | 60% | 12 |
| Body and structure | 35% | 7 |
| Suspension | 35% | 7 |
| Exhaust and emissions | 25% | 5 |
| Steering | 20% | 4 |
The defects inspectors cite
- A suspension pin, bush or joint excessively worn
- Significant brake effort recorded with no brake applied indicating a binding brake
- The aim of a headlamp is not within limits laid down in the requirements
- Warning device shows system malfunction
- A headlamp or light source missing, inoperative or more than ½ not functioning in the case of LED
- Steering rack gaiter or ball joint dust cover missing or no longer prevents the ingress of dirt etc
Where it stands out against its peers
- Brakes: failed more often than 99% of 2009 cars — 70% of its 20 failed tests, where an ordinary 2009 car has 30%.
- Lights and electrics: failed more often than 97% of 2009 cars — 60% of its 20 failed tests, where an ordinary 2009 car has 37%.
- Body and structure: failed more often than 94% of 2009 cars — 35% of its 20 failed tests, where an ordinary 2009 car has 14%.
Same model year only, at least 30 peer cars, zeros included. Every car has a worst part; this shows which, and how far from ordinary it is. A high share means more to check, not a verdict.
NHTSA's investigations are American; no European regulator publishes an equivalent record, so this section has nothing to draw on for a European car. There is no European equivalent of the service-bulletin register either.
