What fails its inspection
Great Britain's MOT record for the 2008 2.2 diesel. 267 of 907 tests failed, 29%.
Better than 25% of 2008 cars. The typical one fails 26%, across 922 models with enough tests behind them to say.
| Where | Share of failures | Failed tests |
|---|---|---|
| Suspension | 63% | 168 |
| Lights and electrics | 38% | 101 |
| Brakes | 37% | 99 |
| Steering | 28% | 74 |
| Tyres and wheels | 17% | 46 |
| Visibility | 14% | 38 |
The defects inspectors cite
- A suspension pin, bush or joint excessively worn
- A steering ball joint with excessive wear or free play
- A suspension joint dust cover missing or no longer prevents the ingress of dirt etc
- A lamp missing, inoperative or in the case of a multiple light source more than 1/2 not functioning
- The aim of a headlamp is not within limits laid down in the requirements
- Brake pipe damaged or excessively corroded
Where it stands out against its peers
- Steering: failed more often than 95% of 2008 cars — 28% of its 267 failed tests, where an ordinary 2008 car has 5%.
Same model year only, at least 30 peer cars, zeros included. Every car has a worst part; this shows which, and how far from ordinary it is. A high share means more to check, not a verdict.
NHTSA's investigations are American; no European regulator publishes an equivalent record, so this section has nothing to draw on for a European car. There is no European equivalent of the service-bulletin register either.

When it starts failing
At 180–200k miles this one fails 42% of its inspections, against the 29% an ordinary car of the same age fails.
| Odometer | Failure rate | Rate | Its age | Tests |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 60–80k miles | 20% | 24% | 41 | |
| 80–100k miles | 30% | 27% | 132 | |
| 100–120k miles | 28% | 29% | 178 | |
| 120–140k miles | 33% | 29% | 233 | |
| 140–160k miles | 29% | 30% | 179 | |
| 160–180k miles | 20% | 30% | 74 | |
| 180–200k miles | 42% | 29% | 36 |
873 British inspections, grouped by the odometer reading recorded at the test.
Half of these have more than 120k miles on them. That is how far people drive this car, not how long it lasts.

Recalls
Filed by the manufacturer with a regulator. A recall is repaired free of charge, whoever owns the car now.

Water can enter the vent mechanism for the front windscreen-wiper motor. This could result in the windscreen-wiper motor failing because of internal corrosion. Failure of the windscreen-wipers whilst driving in rain would lead to reduced visibility for the driver.

A problem with an electronic component in the built-in systems interface may cause some electric equipment, including the windscreen wipers and lighting, to malfunction.

In all vehicles, silicone grease may have contaminated the brake lamp switch contacts; this can prevent the stop lamps operating when the footbrake is applied. In vehicles produced between 01/11/2007 to 29/05/2009, the defective material of the accessory drive belt could damage the pulleys, which may result in faulty warning lamp illumination, battery depletion, loss of power steering and engine overheating.

Due to the unsuitable design of the dynamic tensioner of the accessory belt, slip-resistance efforts will increase over time which may lead to cracks in the area of the tensioner strap. The strap could consequently break and the belt fall, resulting in a loss of power steering, the battery discharging and the engine overheating.
