What fails its inspection
Great Britain's MOT record for the 2015 1.3 petrol. 27 of 120 tests failed, 23%.
Better than 9% of 2015 cars. The typical one fails 15%, across 894 models with enough tests behind them to say.
| Where | Share of failures | Failed tests |
|---|---|---|
| Brakes | 63% | 17 |
| Suspension | 56% | 15 |
| Lights and electrics | 48% | 13 |
| Exhaust and emissions | 44% | 12 |
| Body and structure | 37% | 10 |
| Steering | 37% | 10 |
The defects inspectors cite
- A suspension pin, bush or joint excessively worn
- Brake pipe damaged or excessively corroded
- Exhaust system leaking or insecure
- Steering rack gaiter or ball joint dust cover missing or no longer prevents the ingress of dirt etc
- Brakes imbalance across an axle such that the braking effort from any wheel is less than 70% of the maximum effort recorded from the other wheel on the same axle.
- Lambda coefficient outside the default limits or the range specified by the manufacturer
Where it stands out against its peers
- Brakes: failed more often than 99% of 2015 cars — 63% of its 27 failed tests, where an ordinary 2015 car has 24%.
- Suspension: failed more often than 94% of 2015 cars — 56% of its 27 failed tests, where an ordinary 2015 car has 25%.
- Lights and electrics: failed more often than 94% of 2015 cars — 48% of its 27 failed tests, where an ordinary 2015 car has 22%.
- Exhaust and emissions: failed more often than 99% of 2015 cars — 44% of its 27 failed tests, where an ordinary 2015 car has 8%.
- Steering: failed more often than 99% of 2015 cars — 37% of its 27 failed tests, where an ordinary 2015 car has 2%.
Same model year only, at least 30 peer cars, zeros included. Every car has a worst part; this shows which, and how far from ordinary it is. A high share means more to check, not a verdict.
NHTSA's investigations are American; no European regulator publishes an equivalent record, so this section has nothing to draw on for a European car. There is no European equivalent of the service-bulletin register either.
