What fails its inspection
Great Britain's MOT record for the 2018 1.5 diesel. 21 of 113 tests failed, 19%.
Better than 4% of 2018 cars. The typical one fails 10%, across 966 models with enough tests behind them to say.
| Where | Share of failures | Failed tests |
|---|---|---|
| Lights and electrics | 48% | 10 |
| Suspension | 29% | 6 |
| Tyres and wheels | 29% | 6 |
| Seat belts and airbags | 24% | 5 |
| Brakes | 19% | 4 |
| Exhaust and emissions | 19% | 4 |
The defects inspectors cite
- A suspension pin, bush or joint excessively worn
- A headlamp or light source missing, inoperative or more than ½ not functioning in the case of LED
- A lamp missing, inoperative or in the case of a multiple light source more than 1/2 not functioning
- A seat belt webbing or flexible stalk significantly stretched or weakened
- A tyre pressure monitoring system malfunctioning or obviously inoperative
- A tyre seriously damaged
Where it stands out against its peers
- Lights and electrics: failed more often than 95% of 2018 cars — 48% of its 21 failed tests, where an ordinary 2018 car has 15%.
- Seat belts and airbags: failed more often than 98% of 2018 cars — 24% of its 21 failed tests, where an ordinary 2018 car has 1%.
Same model year only, at least 30 peer cars, zeros included. Every car has a worst part; this shows which, and how far from ordinary it is. A high share means more to check, not a verdict.
NHTSA's investigations are American; no European regulator publishes an equivalent record, so this section has nothing to draw on for a European car. There is no European equivalent of the service-bulletin register either.
