What fails its inspection
Great Britain's MOT record for the 2014 1.7 diesel. 960 of 4,650 tests failed, 21%.
Better than 30% of 2014 cars. The typical one fails 17%, across 870 models with enough tests behind them to say.
| Where | Share of failures | Failed tests |
|---|---|---|
| Brakes | 44% | 426 |
| Tyres and wheels | 29% | 280 |
| Steering | 27% | 259 |
| Lights and electrics | 22% | 212 |
| Suspension | 14% | 138 |
| Visibility | 10% | 96 |
The defects inspectors cite
- A steering ball joint with excessive wear or free play
- A brake lining or pad worn below 1.5mm
- Significant brake effort recorded with no brake applied indicating a binding brake
- Tyre tread depth not in accordance with the requirements
- A suspension pin, bush or joint excessively worn
- A tyre seriously damaged
Where it stands out against its peers
- Brakes: failed more often than 91% of 2014 cars — 44% of its 960 failed tests, where an ordinary 2014 car has 25%.
- Steering: failed more often than 95% of 2014 cars — 27% of its 960 failed tests, where an ordinary 2014 car has 4%.
Same model year only, at least 30 peer cars, zeros included. Every car has a worst part; this shows which, and how far from ordinary it is. A high share means more to check, not a verdict.
NHTSA's investigations are American; no European regulator publishes an equivalent record, so this section has nothing to draw on for a European car. There is no European equivalent of the service-bulletin register either.

When it starts failing
At 200k+ miles this one fails 20% of its inspections, against the 24% an ordinary car of the same age fails.

| 200k+ miles | 20% | 24% | 74 |
4,641 British inspections, grouped by the odometer reading recorded at the test.
Half of these have more than 80k miles on them. That is how far people drive this car, not how long it lasts.

Recalls
Filed by the manufacturer with a regulator. A recall is repaired free of charge, whoever owns the car now.
A12/0044/18
The clutch switch may be faulty. As a consequence, if the vehicle is started when it is in gear, without the hand brake on and the clutch not engaged, the vehicle could move off when not expected causing an accident.
Recall of the product from end users
A12/02321/23
The oil supply to the engine may be interrupted, causing sudden damage to the engine. Moreover, the brake booster may fail, which would lead to a significantly higher braking effort, increasing the risk of an accident. The product does not comply with the Regulation on the approval and market surveillance of motor vehicles and their trailers, and of systems, components and separate technical units intended for such vehicles.
