About this model
The Hyundai Veloster is a compact car which was produced by Hyundai from 2011 until 2022. The car differs from most other hatchbacks with its asymmetrical door configuration, featuring one large door on the driver side and two smaller doors on the passenger side. This configuration is more common on commercial vehicles and minivans.

What fails its inspection
Great Britain's MOT record for the 2012 1.6 petrol. 491 of 1,963 tests failed, 25%.
Better than 24% of 2012 cars. The typical one fails 21%, across 925 models with enough tests behind them to say.
| Where | Share of failures | Failed tests |
|---|---|---|
| Brakes | 41% | 203 |
| Suspension | 33% | 161 |
| Steering | 28% | 136 |
| Tyres and wheels | 27% | 135 |
| Lights and electrics | 18% | 87 |
| Visibility | 14% | 68 |
The defects inspectors cite
- A steering ball joint with excessive wear or free play
- Parking brake efficiency below minimum requirement
- A suspension joint dust cover missing or no longer prevents the ingress of dirt etc
- Tyre tread depth not in accordance with the requirements
- A tyre seriously damaged
- Parking brake inoperative on one side
Where it stands out against its peers
- Steering: failed more often than 94% of 2012 cars — 28% of its 491 failed tests, where an ordinary 2012 car has 5%.
Same model year only, at least 30 peer cars, zeros included. Every car has a worst part; this shows which, and how far from ordinary it is. A high share means more to check, not a verdict.
NHTSA's investigations are American; no European regulator publishes an equivalent record, so this section has nothing to draw on for a European car. There is no European equivalent of the service-bulletin register either.

When it starts failing
At 120–140k miles this one fails 32% of its inspections, against the 25% an ordinary car of the same age fails.
| Odometer | Failure rate | Rate | Its age | Tests |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 0–20k miles | 14% | 10% | 36 | |

| 120–140k miles | 32% | 25% | 72 |
1,933 British inspections, grouped by the odometer reading recorded at the test.
Half of these have more than 60k miles on them. That is how far people drive this car, not how long it lasts.
