About this model
The Jeep Renegade is a subcompact crossover SUV produced by Stellantis under their Jeep marque. It was first shown to the public in March 2014 at the Geneva Motor Show and production started in late August of that year. The Renegade is the smallest vehicle currently marketed by Jeep, until the arrival of the Avenger. It slots between the Avenger and the Compass. It is based on the FCA Small Wide 4×4 platform, which is also shared with other FCA models, including those from Fiat and Alfa Romeo brands.

What fails its inspection
Great Britain's MOT record for the 2016 1.6 diesel. 997 of 5,655 tests failed, 18%.
Better than 20% of 2016 cars. The typical one fails 13%, across 899 models with enough tests behind them to say.
| Where | Share of failures | Failed tests |
|---|---|---|
| Tyres and wheels | 40% | 397 |
| Exhaust and emissions | 26% | 258 |
| Lights and electrics | 24% | 237 |
| Steering | 18% | 179 |
| Brakes | 17% | 165 |
| Suspension | 13% | 129 |
The defects inspectors cite
- Engine MIL illuminated indicating a malfunction
- Tyre tread depth not in accordance with the requirements
- A lamp missing, inoperative or in the case of a multiple light source more than 1/2 not functioning
- Steering rack gaiter or ball joint dust cover missing or no longer prevents the ingress of dirt etc
- A tyre pressure monitoring system malfunctioning or obviously inoperative
- A tyre seriously damaged
Where it stands out against its peers
- Exhaust and emissions: failed more often than 95% of 2016 cars — 26% of its 997 failed tests, where an ordinary 2016 car has 8%.
- Steering: failed more often than 96% of 2016 cars — 18% of its 997 failed tests, where an ordinary 2016 car has 2%.
Same model year only, at least 30 peer cars, zeros included. Every car has a worst part; this shows which, and how far from ordinary it is. A high share means more to check, not a verdict.
NHTSA's investigations are American; no European regulator publishes an equivalent record, so this section has nothing to draw on for a European car. There is no European equivalent of the service-bulletin register either.

When it starts failing
At 120–140k miles this one fails 26% of its inspections, against the 19% an ordinary car of the same age fails.
| Odometer | Failure rate | Rate | Its age | Tests |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 20–40k miles | 11% | 10% | 720 | |
| 40–60k miles | 17% | 13% | 2,222 | |

| 100–120k miles | 21% | 19% | 177 | |
| 120–140k miles | 26% | 19% | 39 |
5,602 British inspections, grouped by the odometer reading recorded at the test.
Half of these have more than 40k miles on them. That is how far people drive this car, not how long it lasts.

Recalls
Filed by the manufacturer with a regulator. A recall is repaired free of charge, whoever owns the car now.
A12/01401/23
A production error in the electric battery can harm its function due to penetration of water. This can cause the battery to overheat, creating a risk of fire. The product does not comply with the Regulation on the approval and market surveillance of motor vehicles and their trailers, and of systems, components and separate technical units intended for such vehicles.

The side airbag inflatable curtain on the driver and passenger side of the vehicle may not be connected and do not function as intended. This can increase the risk of injury when triggered in the event of an accident. The product does not comply with the Regulation on the approval and market surveillance of motor vehicles and their trailers, and of systems, components and separate technical units intended for such vehicles.
Recall of the product from end users
A12/03224/24
The electrical cable connection to the vehicle's Integrated Dual Charge Module (IDCM) may not be tightened to the correct torque. This can result in the 12-volt battery not being charged, which can cause the vehicle to shut down unexpectedly, thereby increasing the risk of an accident and injuries. The product does not comply with the Regulation on the approval and market surveillance of motor vehicles and their trailers, and of systems, components and separate technical units intended for such vehicles.

An impact on the brake pedals can cause the pedal arm and the brake pedal lever to disengage. Moreover, the unlocking lever has a low stiffness due to variations in clamping force and friction. Both these reasons can lead the brake pedals to collapse during braking, preventing the driver from activating the service brakes. This could impair the braking performance, increasing the risk of an accident. The product does not comply with the Regulation on the approval and market surveillance of motor vehicles and their trailers, and of systems, components and separate technical units intended for such vehicles.
