What fails its inspection
Great Britain's MOT record for the 2015 3.0 diesel. 1,668 of 11,236 tests failed, 15%.
Better than 50% of 2015 cars. The typical one fails 15%, across 894 models with enough tests behind them to say.
| Where | Share of failures | Failed tests |
|---|---|---|
| Tyres and wheels | 31% | 522 |
| Brakes | 30% | 507 |
| Suspension | 27% | 445 |
| Seat belts and airbags | 19% | 314 |
| Lights and electrics | 13% | 215 |
| Visibility | 10% | 171 |
The defects inspectors cite
- A suspension joint dust cover missing or no longer prevents the ingress of dirt etc
- An SRS malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) indicates a system malfunction
- A tyre seriously damaged
- A brake lining or pad worn below 1.5mm
- A headlamp or light source missing, inoperative or more than ½ not functioning in the case of LED
- A suspension pin, bush or joint excessively worn
Where it stands out against its peers
- Seat belts and airbags: failed more often than 97% of 2015 cars — 19% of its 1,668 failed tests, where an ordinary 2015 car has 1%.
Same model year only, at least 30 peer cars, zeros included. Every car has a worst part; this shows which, and how far from ordinary it is. A high share means more to check, not a verdict.
NHTSA's investigations are American; no European regulator publishes an equivalent record, so this section has nothing to draw on for a European car. There is no European equivalent of the service-bulletin register either.

When it starts failing
At 140–160k miles this one fails 14% of its inspections, against the 20% an ordinary car of the same age fails.
| Odometer | Failure rate | Rate | Its age | Tests |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 0–20k miles | 7% | 7% | 59 | |
| 20–40k miles | 11% | 10% | 621 | |

| 140–160k miles | 14% | 20% | 77 |
11,207 British inspections, grouped by the odometer reading recorded at the test.
Half of these have more than 60k miles on them. That is how far people drive this car, not how long it lasts.
