What fails its inspection
Great Britain's MOT record for the 2018 2.0 diesel. 924 of 8,289 tests failed, 11%.
Better than 39% of 2018 cars. The typical one fails 10%, across 966 models with enough tests behind them to say.
| Where | Share of failures | Failed tests |
|---|---|---|
| Tyres and wheels | 36% | 336 |
| Brakes | 24% | 219 |
| Visibility | 22% | 199 |
| Exhaust and emissions | 14% | 126 |
| Steering | 10% | 94 |
| Lights and electrics | 10% | 90 |
The defects inspectors cite
- A tyre seriously damaged
- Wiper blade missing or obviously not clearing the windscreen
- Tyre tread depth not in accordance with the requirements
- A brake lining or pad worn below 1.5mm
- Engine MIL illuminated indicating a malfunction
- A steering ball joint with excessive wear or free play
Where it stands out against its peers
- Steering: failed more often than 96% of 2018 cars — 10% of its 924 failed tests, where an ordinary 2018 car has 1%.
Same model year only, at least 30 peer cars, zeros included. Every car has a worst part; this shows which, and how far from ordinary it is. A high share means more to check, not a verdict.
NHTSA's investigations are American; no European regulator publishes an equivalent record, so this section has nothing to draw on for a European car. There is no European equivalent of the service-bulletin register either.

When it starts failing
At 80–100k miles this one fails 13% of its inspections, against the 15% an ordinary car of the same age fails.
| Odometer | Failure rate | Rate | Its age | Tests |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 0–20k miles | 8% | 6% | 241 | |
| 20–40k miles | 10% | 9% | 3,303 | |
| 40–60k miles | 12% | 12% | 3,511 | |
| 60–80k miles | 12% | 14% | 1,018 | |
| 80–100k miles | 13% | 15% | 187 |
8,260 British inspections, grouped by the odometer reading recorded at the test.
Half of these have more than 40k miles on them. That is how far people drive this car, not how long it lasts.

Due to manufacturing defect, the support wire grid between the inner and outer layers of the fuel injector rubber return pipe may not provide sufficient support, which may cause the pipe to bend and break over time.As a result, fuel could leak into the cold side of the motor compartment and onto the road surface, posing a risk to the following traffic. The product does not comply with the requirements laid down in the Regulation on the approval and market surveillance of motor vehicles and their trailers, and of systems, components and separate technical units intended for such vehicles.
