What fails its inspection
Great Britain's MOT record for the 2016 petrol. 14 of 92 tests failed, 15%.
Better than 34% of 2016 cars. The typical one fails 13%, across 899 models with enough tests behind them to say.
| Where | Share of failures | Failed tests |
|---|---|---|
| Brakes | 57% | 8 |
| Body and structure | 36% | 5 |
| Lights and electrics | 29% | 4 |
| Exhaust and emissions | 14% | 2 |
| Suspension | 14% | 2 |
| Visibility | 14% | 2 |
The defects inspectors cite
- Significant brake effort recorded with no brake applied indicating a binding brake
- Exhaust system leaking or insecure
- A driver's seat moving inadvertently or backrest cannot be retained in the upright position
- A shock absorber damaged to the extent that it does not function or showing signs of severe leakage
- Brakes imbalance across an axle such that the braking effort from any wheel is less than 70% of the maximum effort recorded from the other wheel on the same axle.
- Emissions levels exceed default limits
Where it stands out against its peers
- Brakes: failed more often than 98% of 2016 cars — 57% of its 14 failed tests, where an ordinary 2016 car has 23%.
- Body and structure: failed more often than 97% of 2016 cars — 36% of its 14 failed tests, where an ordinary 2016 car has 5%.
Same model year only, at least 30 peer cars, zeros included. Every car has a worst part; this shows which, and how far from ordinary it is. A high share means more to check, not a verdict.
NHTSA's investigations are American; no European regulator publishes an equivalent record, so this section has nothing to draw on for a European car. There is no European equivalent of the service-bulletin register either.
