What fails its inspection
Great Britain's MOT record for the 2017 1.6 diesel. 122 of 616 tests failed, 20%.
Better than 6% of 2017 cars. The typical one fails 12%, across 926 models with enough tests behind them to say.
| Where | Share of failures | Failed tests |
|---|---|---|
| Suspension | 53% | 65 |
| Brakes | 20% | 24 |
| Exhaust and emissions | 20% | 24 |
| Steering | 20% | 24 |
| Tyres and wheels | 20% | 24 |
| Lights and electrics | 19% | 23 |
The defects inspectors cite
- A spring or spring component fractured or seriously weakened
- A suspension pin, bush or joint excessively worn
- A steering ball joint with excessive wear or free play
- Engine MIL illuminated indicating a malfunction
- A brake lining or pad worn below 1.5mm
- A tyre seriously damaged
Where it stands out against its peers
- Suspension: failed more often than 96% of 2017 cars — 53% of its 122 failed tests, where an ordinary 2017 car has 18%.
- Steering: failed more often than 97% of 2017 cars — 20% of its 122 failed tests, where an ordinary 2017 car has 1%.
- Exhaust and emissions: failed more often than 91% of 2017 cars — 20% of its 122 failed tests, where an ordinary 2017 car has 7%.
Same model year only, at least 30 peer cars, zeros included. Every car has a worst part; this shows which, and how far from ordinary it is. A high share means more to check, not a verdict.
NHTSA's investigations are American; no European regulator publishes an equivalent record, so this section has nothing to draw on for a European car. There is no European equivalent of the service-bulletin register either.

When it starts failing
At 120–140k miles this one fails 23% of its inspections, against the 17% an ordinary car of the same age fails.
| Odometer | Failure rate | Rate | Its age | Tests |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 20–40k miles | 7% | 10% | 74 | |
| 40–60k miles | 19% | 13% | 134 | |

| 100–120k miles | 18% | 17% | 60 | |
| 120–140k miles | 23% | 17% | 30 |
556 British inspections, grouped by the odometer reading recorded at the test.
Half of these have more than 60k miles on them. That is how far people drive this car, not how long it lasts.

Recalls
Filed by the manufacturer with a regulator. A recall is repaired free of charge, whoever owns the car now.
A12/03071/24
The side airbag collision sensors and associated cable kits may not have been installed during production. This can cause the airbag and seatbelt pretensioner system to fail to operate as expected under impact conditions, increasing the risk of injury. The product does not comply with the Regulation on the approval and market surveillance of motor vehicles and their trailers, and of systems, components and separate technical units intended for such vehicles.
