What fails its inspection
Great Britain's MOT record for the 2016 1.2 petrol. 3,073 of 21,293 tests failed, 14%.
Better than 39% of 2016 cars. The typical one fails 13%, across 899 models with enough tests behind them to say.
| Where | Share of failures | Failed tests |
|---|---|---|
| Tyres and wheels | 36% | 1,118 |
| Lights and electrics | 31% | 944 |
| Body and structure | 23% | 709 |
| Brakes | 18% | 550 |
| Suspension | 17% | 527 |
| Exhaust and emissions | 11% | 335 |
The defects inspectors cite
- A tyre seriously damaged
- A transmission shaft constant velocity joint boot missing or no longer prevents the ingress of dirt etc
- Exhaust system leaking or insecure
- A headlamp or light source missing, inoperative or more than ½ not functioning in the case of LED
- Tyre tread depth not in accordance with the requirements
- A rear registration plate lamp or light source missing or inoperative in the case of a single lamp or all lamps
Where it stands out against its peers
- Body and structure: failed more often than 92% of 2016 cars — 23% of its 3,073 failed tests, where an ordinary 2016 car has 5%.
Same model year only, at least 30 peer cars, zeros included. Every car has a worst part; this shows which, and how far from ordinary it is. A high share means more to check, not a verdict.
NHTSA's investigations are American; no European regulator publishes an equivalent record, so this section has nothing to draw on for a European car. There is no European equivalent of the service-bulletin register either.

When it starts failing
At 100–120k miles this one fails 27% of its inspections, against the 19% an ordinary car of the same age fails.
| Odometer | Failure rate | Rate | Its age | Tests |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 0–20k miles | 7% | 6% | 1,604 | |
| 20–40k miles | 11% | 10% | 7,557 | |

| 100–120k miles | 27% | 19% | 169 |
21,260 British inspections, grouped by the odometer reading recorded at the test.
Half of these have more than 40k miles on them. That is how far people drive this car, not how long it lasts.

Improperly tightened rear axle components can result in the loss or damage of several parts (rod for the wheel and the chassis, brake caliper, rear axle fixing, ABS sensor, brake housing, brake housing support). This can lead to a loss of driving stability, increasing the risk of an accident. The product does not comply with the Regulation on the approval and market surveillance of motor vehicles and their trailers, and of systems, components and separate technical units intended for such vehicles.
