What fails its inspection
Great Britain's MOT record for the 1999 1.8 petrol. 38 of 145 tests failed, 26%.
Better than 50% of 1999 cars. The typical one fails 26%, across 348 models with enough tests behind them to say.
| Where | Share of failures | Failed tests |
|---|---|---|
| Exhaust and emissions | 66% | 25 |
| Brakes | 50% | 19 |
| Body and structure | 29% | 11 |
| Lights and electrics | 26% | 10 |
| Suspension | 16% | 6 |
| Tyres and wheels | 16% | 6 |
The defects inspectors cite
- Emissions levels exceed default limits
- Lambda coefficient outside the default limits or the range specified by the manufacturer
- Parking brake efficiency below minimum requirement
- Brakes imbalance across an axle such that the braking effort from any wheel is less than 70% of the maximum effort recorded from the other wheel on the same axle.
- Emissions levels exceed the manufacturer's specified limits
- A transmission shaft constant velocity joint boot missing or no longer prevents the ingress of dirt etc
Where it stands out against its peers
- Exhaust and emissions: failed more often than 99% of 1999 cars — 66% of its 38 failed tests, where an ordinary 1999 car has 22%.
Same model year only, at least 30 peer cars, zeros included. Every car has a worst part; this shows which, and how far from ordinary it is. A high share means more to check, not a verdict.
NHTSA's investigations are American; no European regulator publishes an equivalent record, so this section has nothing to draw on for a European car. There is no European equivalent of the service-bulletin register either.
