What fails its inspection
Great Britain's MOT record for the 2004 1.3 petrol. 715 of 2,723 tests failed, 26%.
Better than 61% of 2004 cars. The typical one fails 28%, across 750 models with enough tests behind them to say.
| Where | Share of failures | Failed tests |
|---|---|---|
| Brakes | 42% | 298 |
| Suspension | 36% | 258 |
| Body and structure | 36% | 257 |
| Lights and electrics | 29% | 209 |
| Exhaust and emissions | 29% | 206 |
| Visibility | 14% | 102 |
The defects inspectors cite
- Body, cab or chassis excessively corroded at a mounting point
- Brakes imbalance across an axle such that the braking effort from any wheel is less than 70% of the maximum effort recorded from the other wheel on the same axle.
- Lambda coefficient outside the default limits or the range specified by the manufacturer
- The strength or continuity of the load bearing structure within 30cm of any seat belt anchorage (a 'prescribed area') is significantly reduced or inadequately repaired
- Exhaust system leaking or insecure
- Brake pipe damaged or excessively corroded

- Brake pipe damaged or excessively corroded
- Visibility — 14% of its failures
When it starts failing
At 140–160k miles this one fails 29% of its inspections, against the 31% an ordinary car of the same age fails.
| Odometer | Failure rate | Rate | Its age | Tests |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 20–40k miles | 8% | 17% | 121 | |
| 40–60k miles | 24% | 22% | 430 | |
| 60–80k miles | 24% | 25% | 646 | |
| 80–100k miles | 30% | 28% | 749 | |
| 100–120k miles | 29% | 29% | 452 | |
| 120–140k miles | 28% | 30% | 205 | |
| 140–160k miles | 29% | 31% | 73 |
2,676 British inspections, grouped by the odometer reading recorded at the test.
Half of these have more than 80k miles on them. That is how far people drive this car, not how long it lasts.

Recalls
Filed by the manufacturer with a regulator. A recall is repaired free of charge, whoever owns the car now.
A12/00885/24
The resinous material of the fuel pump is not dense enough, can deform and come into contact with the pump housing. This can cause the pump to fail, potentially resulting in the engine stalling and increasing the risk of accidents and injuries. The product does not comply with the Regulation on the approval and market surveillance of motor vehicles and their trailers, and of systems, components and separate technical units intended for such vehicles.

A12/1134/16
The brake booster does not work adequately and thus the brake pedal operation can be harder, consequently the stopping distance can be longer.
