About this model

The Tesla Model 3 is a battery electric powered mid-size sedan with a fastback body style built by Tesla, Inc., introduced in 2017. The Model 3 was marketed as a more affordable option compared to Tesla's previous vehicles, the Model S and Model X. The Model 3 was the world's top-selling plug-in electric car for three years, from 2018 to 2020, before the Tesla Model Y, a crossover SUV based on the Model 3 chassis, took the top spot. In June 2021, the Model 3 became the first electric car to pass global sales of 1 million.

What fails its inspection

Great Britain's MOT record for the 2020 electric. 3,283 of 23,377 tests failed, 14%.

Better than 7% of 2020 cars. The typical one fails 8%, across 906 models with enough tests behind them to say.

Where it stands out against its peers

Same model year only, at least 30 peer cars, zeros included. Every car has a worst part; this shows which, and how far from ordinary it is. A high share means more to check, not a verdict.

NHTSA's investigations are American; no European regulator publishes an equivalent record, so this section has nothing to draw on for a European car. There is no European equivalent of the service-bulletin register either.

Built from what this car fails on, not from general knowledge of the model.

When it starts failing

At 100–120k miles this one fails 12% of its inspections, against the 16% an ordinary car of the same age fails.

23,304 British inspections, grouped by the odometer reading recorded at the test.

Half of these have more than 20k miles on them. That is how far people drive this car, not how long it lasts.

Recalls

Filed by the manufacturer with a regulator. A recall is repaired free of charge, whoever owns the car now.
