What fails its inspection
Great Britain's MOT record for the 2018 1.8 hybrid. 1,564 of 17,056 tests failed, 9%.
Better than 63% of 2018 cars. The typical one fails 10%, across 966 models with enough tests behind them to say.
| Where | Share of failures | Failed tests |
|---|---|---|
| Tyres and wheels | 41% | 642 |
| Visibility | 40% | 628 |
| Lights and electrics | 29% | 449 |
| Brakes | 10% | 161 |
| Suspension | 2% | 29 |
| Plates and identity | 1% | 21 |
The defects inspectors cite
- Wiper blade missing or obviously not clearing the windscreen
- A headlamp or light source missing, inoperative or more than ½ not functioning in the case of LED
- A tyre seriously damaged
- Tyre tread depth not in accordance with the requirements
- A brake lining or pad worn below 1.5mm
- Headlamp aim unable to be tested
Where it stands out against its peers
- Visibility: failed more often than 97% of 2018 cars — 40% of its 1,564 failed tests, where an ordinary 2018 car has 15%.
Same model year only, at least 30 peer cars, zeros included. Every car has a worst part; this shows which, and how far from ordinary it is. A high share means more to check, not a verdict.
NHTSA's investigations are American; no European regulator publishes an equivalent record, so this section has nothing to draw on for a European car. There is no European equivalent of the service-bulletin register either.

When it starts failing
At 140–160k miles this one fails 13% of its inspections, against the 16% an ordinary car of the same age fails.
| Odometer | Failure rate | Rate | Its age | Tests |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 0–20k miles | 4% | 6% | 1,452 | |
| 20–40k miles | 8% | 9% | 7,064 | |

17,031 British inspections, grouped by the odometer reading recorded at the test.
Half of these have more than 20k miles on them. That is how far people drive this car, not how long it lasts.

Recalls
Filed by the manufacturer with a regulator. A recall is repaired free of charge, whoever owns the car now.

The radar sensor may malfunction due to a faulty installation. This can result in a failure to detect a vehicle in front through the PCS (pre-collision system), which will not provide warnings or brake assistance and the vehicle will not show the driver a message or indicator that the PCS is not working. This may increase the risk of an accident. The product does not comply with the Regulation on the approval and market surveillance of Motor Vehicles and their trailers, and of systems, components and separate technical units intended for such vehicles.

The resistance characteristics of the fuel pump components against high fuel pressure may be inadequate. As a result, cracks may be formed on the welded parts of the pump and a fuel leak may occur, posing a risk to the following traffic. The product does not comply with the requirements laid down in the Regulation on the approval and market surveillance of motor vehicles and their trailers, and of systems, components and separate technical units intended for such vehicles.

Due to a specific software update error that can cause an abrupt reset, the data communication module (DCM) may not restart at the next ignition cycle. It will no longer be possible to initiate an emergency call using the eCall system, increasing the risk of injuries, delayed assistance in the event of an accident. The product does not comply with the Regulation on the approval and market surveillance of motor vehicles and their trailers, and of systems, components and separate technical units intended for such vehicles.

Insufficient pressing of parts in the high pressure fuel pump can cause movement of the cylinder in the fuel pump through which the piston moves. This can create wear between the cylinder and the pump body, resulting in increased stress on valves and/or movement valve seat inside the pump body. This increased stress can cause a crack in the weld of the affected valves, which could lead to a fuel leak, increasing the risk of fire. The product does not comply with the Regulation on the approval and market surveillance of motor vehicles and their trailers, and of systems, components and separate technical units intended for such vehicles.
Recall of the product from end users

The accessory seat cover kit may not be installed correctly causing the seat covers not to tear as designed in the event of an airbag deployment. As a result, the cover could prevent the seat-mounted side airbag from deploying properly, increasing the risk of injury in the event of a crash.
