About this model
The Toyota iQ is a city car manufactured by Toyota and marketed in a single generation for Japan (2008–2016); Europe (2008–2015); and North America (2012–2015), where it was marketed as the Scion iQ. A rebadged variant was marketed in Europe as the Aston Martin Cygnet (2011–2013).

What fails its inspection
Great Britain's MOT record for the 2009 1.0 petrol. 1,090 of 6,725 tests failed, 16%.
Better than 89% of 2009 cars. The typical one fails 25%, across 961 models with enough tests behind them to say.
| Where | Share of failures | Failed tests |
|---|---|---|
| Brakes | 39% | 421 |
| Suspension | 34% | 369 |
| Lights and electrics | 30% | 332 |
| Visibility | 23% | 246 |
| Tyres and wheels | 20% | 219 |
| Exhaust and emissions | 9% | 103 |
The defects inspectors cite
- A suspension joint dust cover missing or no longer prevents the ingress of dirt etc
- Brake pipe damaged or excessively corroded
- Wiper blade missing or obviously not clearing the windscreen
- Windscreen washers not working or not providing sufficient fluid to clear the windscreen
- A brake lining or pad worn below 1.5mm
- A lamp missing, inoperative or in the case of a multiple light source more than 1/2 not functioning
Where it stands out against its peers
- Visibility: failed more often than 90% of 2009 cars — 23% of its 1,090 failed tests, where an ordinary 2009 car has 10%.
Same model year only, at least 30 peer cars, zeros included. Every car has a worst part; this shows which, and how far from ordinary it is. A high share means more to check, not a verdict.
NHTSA's investigations are American; no European regulator publishes an equivalent record, so this section has nothing to draw on for a European car. There is no European equivalent of the service-bulletin register either.

When it starts failing
At 160–180k miles this one fails 19% of its inspections, against the 29% an ordinary car of the same age fails.

| 0–20k miles | 8% | 11% | 174 | |
| 20–40k miles | 11% | 15% | 762 | |

| 160–180k miles | 19% | 29% | 57 |
6,692 British inspections, grouped by the odometer reading recorded at the test.
Half of these have more than 60k miles on them. That is how far people drive this car, not how long it lasts.

Recalls
Filed by the manufacturer with a regulator. A recall is repaired free of charge, whoever owns the car now.
A12/1918/14
Due to insufficient air flow efficiency in the intake system, oil may accumulate in the intercooler. Under certain driving conditions, the oil may flow into the combustion chamber and might cause engine damage, which may increase the risk of a fire in the engine compartment due to leaked oil.
