What fails its inspection
Great Britain's MOT record for the 2013 2.0 diesel. 381 of 2,035 tests failed, 19%.
Better than 51% of 2013 cars. The typical one fails 19%, across 828 models with enough tests behind them to say.
| Where | Share of failures | Failed tests |
|---|---|---|
| Lights and electrics | 50% | 192 |
| Brakes | 30% | 114 |
| Tyres and wheels | 23% | 87 |
| Suspension | 20% | 77 |
| Visibility | 14% | 55 |
| Exhaust and emissions | 5% | 19 |
The defects inspectors cite
- Audible warning inoperative
- A brake lining or pad worn below 1.5mm
- A lamp missing, inoperative or in the case of a multiple light source more than 1/2 not functioning
- Lamp emitted colour, position or intensity not in accordance with the requirements
- Wiper blade missing or obviously not clearing the windscreen
- A suspension joint dust cover missing or no longer prevents the ingress of dirt etc
Where it stands out against its peers
- Lights and electrics: failed more often than 94% of 2013 cars — 50% of its 381 failed tests, where an ordinary 2013 car has 28%.
Same model year only, at least 30 peer cars, zeros included. Every car has a worst part; this shows which, and how far from ordinary it is. A high share means more to check, not a verdict.
NHTSA's investigations are American; no European regulator publishes an equivalent record, so this section has nothing to draw on for a European car. There is no European equivalent of the service-bulletin register either.

When it starts failing
At 200k+ miles this one fails 23% of its inspections, against the 24% an ordinary car of the same age fails.
| Odometer | Failure rate | Rate | Its age | Tests |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 20–40k miles | 11% | 12% | 38 | |
| 40–60k miles | 17% | 16% | 172 | |
| 60–80k miles | 16% | 20% | 434 | |

| 160–180k miles | 16% | 24% | 73 | |
| 180–200k miles | 21% | 24% | 33 | |
| 200k+ miles | 23% | 24% | 142 |
2,035 British inspections, grouped by the odometer reading recorded at the test.
Half of these have more than 80k miles on them. That is how far people drive this car, not how long it lasts.

Recalls
Filed by the manufacturer with a regulator. A recall is repaired free of charge, whoever owns the car now.
A12/00444/21
Due to insufficient durability, the Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) cooler may develop an internal coolant leak which could create smouldering deposits inside the EGR cooler and the intake manifold. This may result in localised thermal damage in the intake system, which might lead to engine power reduction and to increased risk of fire.

A12/0102/17
The mixing ratio of the fire starter component may be incorrect in some initiators. As a result, the side airbag may not deploy.

A12/0143/14
Due to improper tightening of the steering wheel set nut during vehicle assembly, the steering wheel nut could become loose. If the vehicle was continuously operated in this condition, the nut could eventually come off, and the steering wheel could separate from the steering shaft, causing a loss of steering ability and the risk of a crash.

A12/1739/18
The airbag control module for the supplemental restraint system (SRS ECU) has been assembled with application-specific integrated circuits (ASICs) that are susceptible to internal shorting when exposed to high inductive electrical noise from various vehicle electrical components. If this occurs, there is a possibility that the ASIC could become damaged, leading to the airbag(s) and/or seat belt pretensioners being deactivated or deploying inadvertently.
